Researchers from the University of Manchester have introduced MentalLLaMA, the first open-source series of large language models (LLMs) for interpretable mental health analysis. These models, including MentalLLaMA-chat-13B, outperform state-of-the-art techniques in terms of predictive accuracy and the quality of generated explanations. The researchers also created the Interpretable Mental Health Instruction (IMHI) dataset, which serves as a benchmark for understandable mental health analysis. The goal is to improve LLMs for comprehensible mental health analysis.
Introducing MentalLLaMA: The First Open-Source LLM Series for Readable Mental Health Analysis with Instruction Following
Understanding and addressing mental health issues is crucial for public health. However, many people hesitate to seek psychiatric assistance due to stigma. Social media has become an integral part of daily life, and it offers valuable insights into mental health. Studies have shown that analyzing social media texts using natural language processing (NLP) can help identify mental health problems early on.
Prior approaches to NLP for mental health focused on text classification using pre-trained language models. However, these models lacked interpretability, which limited their practical application. Recent studies have explored the use of large language models, such as ChatGPT2 and LLaMA, to improve the interpretability of mental health analysis.
While ChatGPT has shown potential, it still falls short in real-world situations. To address this, a practical method is to fine-tune the large language models on a limited amount of data from the target domain. However, good training data and open-source LLMs specifically designed for interpretable mental health analysis are currently lacking.
To bridge these gaps, researchers from the University of Manchester have created the Interpretable Mental Health Instruction (IMHI) dataset. This multi-task and multisource dataset contains 105K data samples, covering various mental health detection tasks. It includes social media posts, labels, and annotations with thorough justifications.
Based on the IMHI dataset, they have introduced MentalLLaMA, the first open-source LLM series for interpretable mental health analysis with instruction-following capacity. MentalLLaMA models are trained on the LLaMA2 foundation models and have shown excellent performance in various mental health analysis tasks.
The researchers have also developed an assessment standard for understandable mental health analysis, comparing MentalLLaMA with existing techniques. MentalLLaMA has demonstrated superior predictive accuracy and the ability to generate high-quality explanations.
