The Impressionist art movement, known for its broken brushstrokes, inspired a new approach to rendering realistic human subjects in photographs. However, existing techniques for creating drivable photorealistic humans require extensive multi-view data and complex pre-processing.

Researchers from Meta Reality Labs Research, Technical University of Darmstadt, and Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems have developed a new method for representing 3D human appearance and deformations using 3D Gaussians. This approach allows for avatars with realistic anatomy and aesthetics that can be easily animated.

The researchers use Gaussian splats as a replacement for brushstrokes, eliminating the need for complicated camera ray sampling. They also employ cages as a deformation model, which simplifies the transformation of 3D Gaussian representations. This approach allows for separate representation of the torso, face, and clothing using cages.

The team trained person-specific models using a condensed input based on human stance, reducing the need for dense input signals. The method produces high-quality output and outperforms existing techniques, even with equivalent input. Importantly, it does not require ground truth geometry, reducing processing time.
