How GraphCast Works

It is trained on 50 years’ worth of historical weather data and looks for patterns in the data instead of creating a model of the atmosphere. By finding subtle patterns that fixed equations cannot detect, GraphCast makes predictions based on current weather conditions.

While GraphCast’s level of detail may not match traditional models, it offers significantly higher accuracy and speed. While supercomputers take hours to process weather data, GraphCast produces results in less than a minute.

Integration with Existing Methods

GraphCast does not replace traditional NWP models but complements them. MLWP relies on historical data produced by NWP models. By using GraphCast alongside current methods, meteorological organizations can predict extreme weather events faster and more accurately.
