Formula 1 is set to trial an AI Computer Vision system at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to analyze track limit incidents. Currently, human stewards review video feeds during races to identify infringements, but the new AI system will do the bulk of the work. The technology aims to save time and improve accuracy in decision-making, potentially leading to broader use of AI in motorsport.
Formula 1 racing to trial AI system to enforce track limits
F1 racing is a highly competitive sport where winning and losing can come down to fractions of seconds. One crucial aspect of the race is ensuring that drivers stay within the track limits. Currently, race stewards review video feeds to identify drivers who stray off the track, but this process can be time-consuming and prone to human error.
That’s where AI comes in. The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) will trial an AI Computer Vision system at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to analyze suspected track limit incidents in real-time. Instead of relying solely on human stewards, AI will do the bulk of the work, significantly reducing the number of incidents that require human review.
The AI Computer Vision system uses shape analysis to determine if a driver has crossed the track limits. It will analyze the video feeds and identify around 50 incidents that may require further review by human stewards. This technology has already been successfully used in applications like cancer screening, where it helps doctors focus on cases that require their expertise.
Benefits of AI in Formula 1
Implementing AI in Formula 1 has several benefits. Firstly, it saves time and reduces the delay in penalizing drivers who exceed track limits. With AI analyzing incidents in real-time, penalties can be issued promptly, ensuring a fair competition. Secondly, AI can help race directors interpret the rules accurately. Mistakes in decision-making can have significant consequences, as seen in the controversial finale of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. AI-powered tools can provide guidance to race directors, helping them make the right decisions under pressure.
