The Value of CircuitNet: A Brain-Inspired Neural Network Architecture
Enhanced Performance Across Diverse Domains
The success of artificial neural networks (ANNs) lies in mimicking simplified brain structures and leveraging insights from neuroscience to enhance design and efficiency.
Researchers from Microsoft Research Asia introduced CircuitNet, a neural network inspired by neuronal circuit architectures, which outperforms popular neural networks in function approximation, image classification, reinforcement learning, and time series forecasting, highlighting the benefits of incorporating neuroscience principles into deep learning model design.
CircuitNet models signal transmission between neurons within Circuit Motif Units (CMUs) to support diverse circuit motifs such as feed-forward, mutual, feedback, and lateral connections. It uses linear transformations, neuron-wise attention, and neuron pair products to capture complex neural patterns.
The experimental results demonstrate that CircuitNet outperforms traditional neural networks like MLPs, CNNs, RNNs, and transformers in various tasks, including function approximation, reinforcement learning, image classification, and time series forecasting. It achieves comparable or better results than other advanced models like ResNet, ViT, and transformers, with fewer parameters and computational resources.
In conclusion, CircuitNet is a neural network architecture inspired by neural circuits in the brain, capable of enhancing task performance across diverse domains.
