Snapchat, like other social media platforms, requires users to be at least 13 years old. However, the effectiveness of these platforms in preventing younger children from accessing them is debatable.

The Information Commissioner, John Edwards, stated that their preliminary findings indicate that Snap did not thoroughly recognize and evaluate the privacy risks to children and other users before introducing “My AI.” However, the ICO clarified that these initial observations do not mean that Snapchat has violated UK data protection laws. They have not yet decided whether to issue a formal enforcement notice.

If Snapchat does not adequately address these concerns, the ICO suggested that “My AI” could be banned in the UK.

Snap responded by expressing its commitment to user privacy. They stated that “My AI” underwent a comprehensive legal and privacy scrutiny before its public launch. They are dedicated to working with the ICO to ensure their risk evaluation measures meet expectations.

The ICO’s inquiry focuses on how “My AI” handles the personal data of approximately 21 million Snapchat users in the UK, particularly children aged 13-17.

“My AI” is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology, which is gaining attention from international policymakers who are considering regulation strategies for privacy and security challenges.
