Solve Update Issues: OpenClaw 2026.9.5 Adds Updates & Hot Reload

OpenClaw 2026.9.5 introduces Atomic Updates to stop upgrades from breaking a running agent. Previously an update either improved the agent or took it down completely, leaving no instance to diagnose the failure. The problem stemmed from thousands of configuration options and maintainers rarely feeling the impact themselves. The new flow keeps the current gateway running while a private copy of the setup validates the next version. If validation passes, the system switches over and verifies the update; if it fails, it rolls back to the last working configuration, preserving an operative agent for troubleshooting.

To use Atomic Updates, ensure you are on Node 24.16 or later, pull the latest npm tag, and run the standard upgrade command. Before upgrading, keep a verified backup of your data because the private validation copy is not a substitute for a backup and database migrations cannot be undone by rolling back the application. After an interactive update fails, you can opt into the AI repair flow, which will start only after you confirm and uses your account tokens with a 30‑second timeout.

Additional features in this release include plugin hot reload, conversation sharing, expanded GPT Live, shared browser pages, conversation archiving, and specialist‑agent guided setup. Each of these builds on the core reliability improvement, letting you extend functionality without risking downtime.

By guaranteeing that a working agent is always available, OpenClaw 2026.9.5 removes the biggest barrier to continuous improvement for self‑hosted AI agents.
