Reduce Token Use 40% with Ember-1: Faster, Cheaper AI Inference

Fireworks AI’s Ember-1 addresses a real pain point for teams building agentic AI systems: reasoning models often waste the majority of their output on internal thought loops. In models like Kimi K3, more than 90 % of generated tokens can be spent on self‑reflection that is replayed on every turn, causing context to grow quadratically and driving up costs in multi‑step workflows. Lowering the reasoning effort at inference time sacrifices too much quality, leaving developers stuck between high expense and degraded performance.

Ember-1 solves this by training the model to reason more efficiently rather than simply throttling it. The model retains useful self‑correction behaviors while trimming redundant reasoning and unproductive loops. Trained on a diverse mix of math, coding, instruction following, conversation, search, tool use and software engineering tasks, Ember-1 was shaped through over 50 experiments and 200 evaluations using Fireworks’ own Serverless Training platform. The result is a model that delivers Kimi K3‑level accuracy with roughly 40 % fewer tokens, translating to 35‑50 % reductions in reasoning trace length across benchmarks and real‑world traffic.

Deployment is straightforward but limited to the Fireworks serverless API as a Research Preview; the weights, training code and exact algorithms are not released, so self‑hosting isn’t possible today. Pricing matches Kimi K3—$3.00 input, $0.30 cached input, $15.00 output per million tokens—so savings come purely from generating fewer tokens. In live A/B tests with two production customers, Ember-1 cut output tokens from 49.3K to 29.9K per task, dropped reasoning tokens by 71.3 % and total tokens by 39 %, while task scores stayed virtually unchanged (0.753 vs 0.751). This equates to roughly $0.45 in output cost per task versus $0.74 with the baseline.

For teams looking to curb ballooning inference expenses without sacrificing the reasoning power needed for coding, agents or complex workflows, Ember-1 offers a practical path: call the Fireworks API, enjoy lower token usage, and keep accuracy intact.
