Copilot CLI Users: Stop Picking Models—HydraFusion Does It

Developers who rely on AI coding assistants often face a hard choice: pick one model for speed and low cost or choose a stronger model for better quality and accept higher latency and expense. Switching models manually for each task is tedious and error‑prone, and many teams lack visibility into how different models contribute to the final output. GitHub’s research preview HydraFusion addresses this by turning model selection into a per‑request workflow problem instead of a static setting.

To try it, open GitHub Copilot CLI, run the update command, turn the experimental flag on, then choose HydraFusion from the model list. The system now decides at runtime whether to use a single model, a cascade where an efficient draft is checked by a quality gate and possibly escalated to a stronger model, or a critique pattern where a second model from a different family reviews the draft and the original model revises once. Each path balances speed, cost, and quality in a transparent way.

HydraFusion runs with built‑in guardrails: full accounting of every step, bounded execution with timeouts, isolated review that cannot touch the repository, fail‑safe behavior that applies no change on failure, and validated routing that checks model availability before work starts. Internally it logs role, outcome, cost, latency and diagnostics per leg while presenting the developer with a single coherent response and one permission‑aware change set.

Benchmark tests against Claude Opus 5 show up to a 67 % reduction in estimated cost with a 4.9‑point quality gain on TerminalBench 2.1, 36 % lower cost with a small quality dip on DeepSWE, and 65 % lower cost with negligible quality change on CheckpointBench. The preview is available to all Copilot plan users in the CLI and bills each underlying model at its standard rate.

In short, HydraFusion lets teams keep fast cheap paths when they suffice, automatically invoke stronger reasoning when needed, and gain outside review without extra operational overhead.
