Meta’s Muse AI Agent Simplifies Files, Mail & Calendar on Mac

Meta’s Muse for Mac brings an AI agent that can act inside your files, mail, messages, calendar and notes without you having to copy and paste data into a chat window. The promise is real‑world help that works across apps, but many users worry about privacy, unexpected actions and limited availability.

The first concern is permission. Muse asks for opt‑in access to each data source and offers an optional Full Disk Access toggle. To stay safe, start by granting only the folders or apps you need for a test task, such as organizing Downloads. Keep the switches off for mail, messages or calendar until you verify the agent’s behavior. You can revisit Settings at any time to add or remove access, and Muse will always pause before deleting files or sending a message until you approve.

A second issue is the current rollout limits. The free macOS download is available only in the United States and comes with a weekly token allowance of up to 100 M tokens. If you live outside the US or need heavier usage, plan your most important automation for the allowed window and consider waiting for the broader release or the upcoming Confidential VM option that will encrypt your data with a personal key.

Third, Muse runs asynchronously, which means it can continue working after you close the window. This background activity can feel opaque. Use the built‑in status bar and the “Run task” button to see when the agent is active, and always wait for the approval prompt before it performs a sensitive action such as sending a summary or deleting a file. The Reset button lets you stop the agent instantly and clear any pending steps.

Finally, Muse is designed to hand off work between devices. To avoid confusion, pick one device—usually your Mac—as the primary starter and keep the thread visible in the WhatsApp, iPhone or Android apps. When you check in from another device, Muse will resume exactly where it left off, so you never lose context.

By setting tight permissions, respecting the usage caps, monitoring background work and managing the cross‑device thread, you can turn Muse for Mac into a reliable, low‑risk assistant that handles everyday chores without exposing your data.
