In a recent interview at Nvidia GTC25, Chandu Nair, Senior VP of Data, AI, and Innovation at Lowe’s, shared the company’s vision for leveraging AI to enhance customer experience and improve operational efficiency.

A Holistic AI Approach: The “Hobby Shop” Strategy

Lowe’s has adopted a comprehensive AI strategy focused on three key areas: improving the customer shopping experience, empowering store associates, and streamlining internal operations. This strategy, known as the “hobby shop” approach, aims to address the gaps in information and expertise that customers often face in home improvement projects. Chandu emphasized the importance of shifting from merely selling products to solving customer problems.

Mylow: Personalized AI-Powered Shopping Assistance

A key component of Lowe’s AI initiatives is Mylow, an AI-powered shopping assistant available through the Lowe’s app and website. Mylow offers personalized support for home improvement projects, helping customers navigate complex tasks.

Chandu explained that Mylow curates a list of necessary products for specific projects and includes instructional content, product recommendations, and relevant YouTube videos, providing comprehensive support for customers seeking guidance.

AI-Powered Store Companion for Associates

Lowe’s is also equipping its 270,000 associates with an AI-powered store companion to enhance customer interactions and provide real-time assistance. This tool, built on the same AI technology as Mylow, helps associates answer customer questions and deliver seamless support. Utilizing computer vision technology, the system can identify customers who may need assistance based on their behavior in the store.

Computer Vision for Loss Prevention and Enhanced Security

In addition to customer support, Lowe’s employs computer vision technology at self-checkout stations to reduce theft and improve security and operational efficiency.

A Scalable AI Combination Approach

Lowe’s is distinguished by its successful implementation of a hybrid AI strategy, combining traditional AI with generative AI at scale. Chandu stated, “We believe we are the only retailer using both Generative AI and configurations in the store to assist our customers.” This integrated approach not only enhances customer service but also optimizes internal processes, reinforcing Lowe’s position as a leader in AI-driven retail innovation.
